Today is World Mental Health Day. I think this is important to note, and important to talk about. As Womanpreneurs, we need to take care of ourselves so we can take care of our businesses and our families. According to Robert Stickgold of Harvard Medical, “There seems to be a causal relationship between impaired sleep and some of the psychiatric symptomatology and disorders that we’re seeing.” Let’s explore a few ways to help you sleep better and improve your mental awareness and well-being.

Limit Screen Time

That’s right, limit the amount of time you spend online, especially later in the evening. Studies show that electronic screens significantly impair your ability to fall asleep. Your TV, tablet, smartphone or laptop suppresses the release of melatonin and messes with your internal clock. The more devices you use in the evening, the harder it will be to fall asleep. Grab a good book and a cup of sleepytime tea instead.

Keep a Gratitude Journal

This might sound a little weird, but keeping a gratitude journal can help you focus on what’s important in your life. There are many benefits to practicing gratitude. One of them, believe it or not, is better sleep. Gratitude makes you more aware of what is good in your life. This in turn, keeps worry (one of those things that keeps you up at night) at bay.

Relax with Essential Oils

We all know at least one person that sells essential oils. Chances are, they have more than one blend that will help you with relaxation. Lavender is a good one to help with relaxation. Reducing your stress and relaxing will help you get to sleep faster. Give your local consultant a call for the best oils for your situation.

Exercise

Physical activity is an excellent, natural mood booster. When you exercise, your body releases endorphins. These are the happy hormones. Physical exertion will help keep you in shape (bonus!), help you sleep better, clear your mind and lift your mood.

Getting the rest you need sets you up to be successful in your day. You’ll be more alert, more capable of completing projects, and more attentive to the needs of your family.

What are some of the things you do to get better sleep?
